Be Fast - First Aid for Strokes

Welcome to the micro learn on strokes! Strokes, also known as cerebrovascular accidents, occur when there is a disruption of blood flow to the brain. This can be caused by a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel, leading to brain cell damage and potentially permanent neurological deficits. Strokes can happen to anyone at any age, but certain risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking can increase the likelihood of experiencing a stroke.


There are two main types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked, cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutrients to brain cells. This can be caused by a blood clot or a buildup of fatty deposits in the blood vessels. On the other hand, hemorrhagic strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and causes bleeding in the brain. This can be caused by high blood pressure, aneurysms, or other conditions that weaken blood vessels.


Recognizing the signs and symptoms of a stroke is crucial in seeking immediate medical attention. Common symptoms include sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, and loss of balance or coordination.
