What is a First Aid Annual Refresher Course?

A First Aid Annual Refresher Course is designed for qualified First Aid at Work (FAW) and Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) first aiders who want to keep their first aid knowledge and practical skills current.

Annual first aid refresher training can help first aiders maintain their confidence and competence throughout the three-year period that their FAW or EFAW certificate remains valid.

How often should first aiders complete refresher training?

It is recommended that qualified workplace first aiders undertake annual first aid refresher training while their FAW or EFAW certificate is still valid. The annual refresher provides an opportunity to revisit key first aid skills and knowledge rather than waiting until the qualification is due to expire.

The annual refresher does not replace the three-year FAW or EFAW requalification course.

Can I renew my first aid certificate with an annual refresher course?

No. An annual first aid refresher course is not a requalification course and cannot be used to renew an expired FAW or EFAW certificate.

If your first aid certificate is approaching its expiry date, you will need to complete the appropriate FAW or EFAW requalification course before the certificate expires.

What happens if my first aid certificate expires?

Once your FAW or EFAW certificate has expired, an annual refresher course cannot be used to renew it. You will need to complete the appropriate first aid requalification course, including the required practical assessment, to regain your qualification.

For this reason, it is important to plan your first aid refresher training and requalification before your current certificate expires.

Who is the annual first aid refresher course for?

The course is intended for people who already hold a valid FAW or EFAW first aid qualification and need to maintain their first aid skills during the three-year certification period.

If your certificate has expired or is due to expire and you need to renew your qualification, you should book the appropriate first aid requalification course instead.
